Pros and cons of JapanTaxi(旧:全国タクシー) app for iPhone and iPad
JapanTaxi(旧:全国タクシー) app good for
I am very impressed. Very clear, simple, easy to use and comprehensive.
Scheduled a ride to a concert so I wouldnt be late. Driver was about 5 minutes early standing waiting for me, knew my name, and drove me on the fastest route. Shibuya dogenzaka to Meguro for just under 2000 yen.
I have been using the app for some time now.
Pros:
1. Easy to calculate fare
2. Easy to order taxi based on location
3. Use Apple pay (Suica, QuickPay)
4. Choose not just pick up, but also drop down location
Cons:
1. Additional charge of ¥410 on each ride (though I can understand the motivation, I feel the price could be lower)
2. There have been about 3/10 times I have not been able to find a taxi with the app. So expect sometimes to go the good old way by going out to wait for a taxi on your way!
Overall a good app! I am happy using it.
Some bad moments
This app does not disclose the additional dispatch fee you are charged to use the app. (Upon further study I can see the disclosure is hidden off-screen in a section the UI gives no hint is scrollable). This is the same fee taxis historically have charged in Japan for telephone reservations. (I only finally saw a disclaimer in the app description after writing the review!)
It is ridiculous for a company to charge you for reducing their labor costs and improving their efficiency in customer flow. (In actuality I assume this app is just a middle-man business and the calls are still made.) Its like a bank charging for ATMs or online banking (and they actually do the latter for business accounts in Japan!) I can walk 150 meters to the main road to flag a taxi much faster than one can be delivered with no such fee and this is so much more the case for visitors to Tokyo.
The driver was also unable to figure out how to get to our apartment, was late, and had to call to get directions in Japanese as we stood in the rain.
There is no obvious route options in the hailing process. As 75% of Tokyo taxi drivers know their way around the city worse than this foreigner who doesnt drive, the ability to provide destinations and preferred routes to their GPS units would save customers time and money. In our case, the taxi driver chose a route even I could have easily improved on. I didnt bother once my wife had already approved.
The niche payment service sign up is onerous. The security of online data in Japan is notoriously poor with insiders often selling data to organized crime so caveat emptor—especially if the implementation of the "secret code" is any indication of this companys idea of security. The secret code you chose at sign up as a kind of PIN pops up in the reservation window in very large print along with instructions to tell it to the driver when they ask. My driver never asked and I never told but I cant say I blame him because it is completely perfunctory. If someone has stolen a phone, this does nothing to stop them from using the registered credit card for free taxi rides since the PIN is provided by the app! Nor can I see how it would stop any other form of fraud. Like I said, completely perfunctory.
I fear if this is the best Tokyo taxi monopolies can offer, they will soon meet the same fate Japanese mobile phone makers did when their "Galapagos" phones were crushed by Apple. Uber may have a tough battle with "regulatory capture" (to speak euphemistically) but theres no contest in terms of actual implementation.
Okay but most people visiting will have data only SIM... no texting
I was in the middle of nowhere and needed to get to the train station. Low and behold the App Store heard my call. The saying is true there is an app for that.
This app used to work. With the new update I cannot call a taxi, it either spins forever, or spits out a confirmation number, which then disappears. No record of the order anywhere. No taxi. Late for flight. Thanks. Please fix, in its current state his version is absolutely useless.
Wider coverage, more convenient and cheaper than Uber in Japan.
I love this app I dont have to call for a taxi anymore and my credit card is already loaded so I just give a special number to the driver and they drop my off to my location and thats that. No issues its awesome!! I love this app its a definite must have!!!
